Psychological Therapy Services

Biography:

Carlo is a Clinical Psychologist with a Masters degree at Macquarie University and a First Class Honours degree majoring in Psychology. Carlo’s passion for mental health first sparked in 2002 whilst working as a Social Worker in community mental health and justice health. He has also enjoyed working in public mental health settings. Carlo has gained over 10 years clinical experience with children, adolescents and adults across diverse settings including community mental health, university counselling, correctional facilities, controlled research trials, hospital inpatient and outpatient services and private practice.

Carlo works primarily from an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) approach, drawing on aspects of Schema Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Motivational Interviewing, depending on the clients presenting issues. Carlo has a particular interest and experience in trauma and trauma-related conditions. Trauma can present in varied ways and this might include assisting clients with difficulties related to grief/adjustment, anxiety, depression, interpersonal issues, health related issues (e.g., chronic pain), eating, substance misuse, and other addictive behaviours (e.g., gambling, online gaming). His therapeutic approach is based on a relationship of collaboration, trust, humour, and draws on individual strengths.

ACT is an evidence-based approach; an innovative form of behavioural and cognitive therapy. ACT has moved away from the traditional CBT emphasis on changing or correcting one’s thoughts in order to alleviate suffering. Instead, ACT utilises creative ways to relate differently to challenging experiences, so they no longer entangle us. ACT incorporates acceptance strategies, mindfulness techniques, and a wide range of behavioral approaches. ACT gets its name from one of its core messages: accept what is out of your personal control and commit to action that improves and enriches your life.
